Going Green
We are seeing a major increase in the active adoption of green building practices across the country and throughout the developed nations of the world. This movement is in direct response to the recognition of environmental issues of all kinds; climate change, water pollution, air pollution, landfilled wastes, drought, as well as direct and immediate physical health concerns. This rapid adoption has come about as a direct result of the US Green Building Councils LEED Rating System (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which was intended to “transform the design, construction, and manufacturing marketplace.” LEED is clearly achieving this goal. Now including hundreds of rated buildings, thousands of registered projects, and covering billions of square feet of construction, the LEED standards are continuing to evolve upward and to drive significant change in current and future design and construction practice.
In the construction industry, rapid change in “best practices,” evolving standards, as well as multiple certification types for practitioners, rating systems, and materials, all under the green banner, could confuse the most vigilant inquirer. Diligence and experience are required to weed the “greenwash” from the truly beneficial standards and qualifications. Education and experience are the keys to approaching this. We all need to continue to become skillful and effective.
At Hammond and Company you can be certain that our ongoing attention on best practice and leading edge training keep us at the front line of the industry, and has for many years. The opportunity we have had to be an intimate part of project teams pursuing the highest standards of Green Building and in certifying projects give us an unique ability to sift the significant approaches and benefits from the low merit options, standards, and certifications in the current market. We live and breathe Green Building. Our approach enfolds it implicitly in every endeavor from beginning to end. At whatever budget level, there are opportunities to include beneficial aspects of Green Building best practice.
